The Business Opportunity
The global commercial data team of a major pharmaceutical organization had inherited ownership of a platform hosting and managing real-world data for internal customers from commercial, medical, and R&D functions. Given the aging technology infrastructure and budgetary constraints, the platform team needed to decrease the administrative overhead of preserving strong data governance & access compliance with minimal investment of time or resources.

Our team identified a subset of key stakeholders who were experienced in being data asset owners – as well as customers of the data – to understand and to document the end-to-end lifecycle of these typical real-world datasets. We described current state processes and proposed future state processes that would improve customer experience and compliance, as well as identifying targets for future automation. Finally, we identified short-term, low-cost projects that could be handled without additional budget that would significantly improve user experience.
Meaningful Results
Our analysis & recommendations led to the formal incorporation of a data steward role in the long-term product roadmap, to ultimately be realized as part of a re-platforming initiative. This is estimated to reduce administrative overhead for at least 20-25 Director-VP level staff, as well as to provide a single point of contact for 100s of end users. Our recommendations also resulted in a complete refresh of the existing data catalog, eliminating 100s of confusing & unnecessary metadata attributes.

A large, complex, matrixed organization can often have multiple internal products and technologies that have the same objectives; we were delighted to serve in the lifecycle management of a platform that was created specifically to centralize multiple, siloed products into a single platform.
