AI Won't Replace Public Servants. It Will Free Them to Do Their Best Work.
Public services are the bedrock of our society. They are the essential systems and infrastructure that keep our communities safe, healthy, and prosperous. From clean water and reliable electricity to healthcare and transportation, the public sector is responsible for the fundamental functions that make modern life possible.
I believe we are at a critical juncture in technology adoption in the public sector, particularly in health. Newly mandated Medicaid eligibility requirements, regulation over pharmaceutical sales, and the rapidly changing regulation landscape around AI is putting extreme burden on already-strained systems to adapt quickly and deliver more with less. Simultaneously, the current administration’s efforts to streamline AI adoption and remove red tape are opening doors for innovation and rapid growth.
At the heart of this critical work is an incredible workforce of dedicated public servants. I have had the privilege of working with leaders of social service organizations delivering essential mental health, addiction recovery, and housing assistance to families in need. I have worked with state departments of Health planning critical resources and policy responses during the pandemic. And I’ve worked with academics and researchers relentlessly pursuing knowledge of social determinants of health, barriers to access, and more. This isn’t just a job for these individuals; it’s a profound commitment to solving complex problems and improving lives. They are some of the most mission-driven and heart-forward people I have ever met.

For example, while the private sector has poured billions into modernizing human resources functions with cutting-edge platforms, public sector HR departments are often expected to manage complex personnel issues with little to no budget, outdated systems, and a rigid focus on compliance over efficiency. These resource limitations mean that many public servants are forced to spend their time on manual, repetitive tasks rather than the high-impact work they are passionate about.

Through things like AI-driven data insights on large public sector datasets, and AI chatbots for often lengthy or manual processes, we have a massive opportunity to give public employees back their most valuable resource: their time.
Importantly, this AI automation won’t take away from their job – it will free them up to do the hardest and most impactful parts of their work better. AI can handle the repetitive data entry and routine requests, allowing public servants to focus on challenging cases, personal interactions, and bringing empathy and their motivating, mission-driven heart to the work that truly matters.
Early Results:
We are already seeing examples of AI making a difference in the public sector. For instance, the Department of Veterans Affairs is exploring AI to streamline medical record analysis and speed up disability claims processing. In cities from Palm Beach FL to Phoenix AZ, AI-powered chatbots are now handling routine inquiries for business licenses and permits, freeing up staff to assist with more complex issues.
In one implementation, we supported a regional U.S. District Court within the Federal Judiciary to move from time-consuming, manual, PDF-based workflows to automated forms for the employee appraisal processes. Intelligent automation transformed a manual process that used to take several weeks into about 10 minutes, for hundreds of employees.
Where to Start: A Practical Guide to Implementation
For public sector leaders ready to embark on this journey, the first step is to get tactical. Rather than jumping straight to a solution, start by taking a critical look at your current operations.
1.Take Inventory
First, get a handle on your data. Assess your existing systems and evaluate your data cleanliness, knowledge management, and data governance. If these things aren’t in place, pick a specific area to start. This might look like cleaning your Medicaid claims databases, or organizing HR systems and data on public sector employees, or standardizing records in your public housing authority. If you don’t have one yet, establishing a data governance working group is an easy and highly effective first step.
Next, take inventory of your time. What are the processes that take an inordinate amount of people-time? Which tasks are the stickiest, most challenging, and biggest time-sucks for your employees? Importantly, this critical review should also include where the public spends its time – things like navigating complex forms for business licenses and permits, applying for certifications, or (of course) waiting in line at the DMV.
2.Identify a Concrete Use Case
Once you have an inventory, identify a specific and tangible use case for AI. Government procurement can be a hurdle. Start with a small, low-cost pilot project that is easy to approve, allowing you to demonstrate value before seeking larger funding and navigating a full-scale RFP process.
This should be a relatively compartmentalized problem that you can solve quickly and easily. Ideally, it’s not in a highly regulated sector like public health services, but something where the AI can demonstrate an immediate return on investment. A great example might be using AI to automate the initial review of applications for a professional license or using a chatbot to answer common questions on a city’s website.

3.Tell the Story and Generate Buy-In
Finally, and perhaps most importantly, tell the story! The public sector in particular requires significant stakeholder engagement due to limited resources and high visibility. Once you have a successful use case, demonstrate the ROI. Show how the technology freed up employees to deliver higher quality, more personalized services. Show how it improved the public’s experience. Generating buy-in opens the doors to empower your team with the training and support they need to succeed with new tools.
Through your first implementation, you will also learn how AI brings a distinct set of challenges and opportunities. The combination of demonstrated value and real-world insights from experience will allow you to create a targeted and effective RFP. Soon, you will scale your efforts and implement the next project, creating a ripple effect of efficiency and improved service delivery.
A Better Future for Public Service
Technology isn’t a silver bullet, but it is a powerful enabler. It has the potential to transform how our public sector operates, not by replacing our dedicated public servants, but by unlocking their full potential. Social workers can put more energy to empathy and less to filling out documentation; developers can focus more on partnering with small businesses than checking requirements and permits; and leaders can get deeper data insights to drive strategy instead of wading through messy systems.
